Indian Head Massage has been used for thousands of years to remove negative energy and aid healing. This ancient art has been adapted to help treat the stresses and strains of modern-day life. It is a safe, simple and effective therapy that uses a series of massage strokes to treat the area’s most vulnerable to stress – namely the upper back, shoulders, head and neck.

LESSON 1

Pre-reading / self-research to be done prior to Zoom lesson

  • Read/research what is Indian Head Massage
  • Read/research the history of Indian Head Massage

Online support

  • Induction, welcome, discussion about IHM, have you had one, where, when, what did you think of it?
  • Providing an IHM treatment – oil / no oil, chair, the area treated, equipment, the comfort of client and therapist
  • Discussion about Narendra Mehta
  • Prepare self, client and work area for treatment
  • Possible effects of IHM
  • Discussion of bones of the upper body

Homework

  • Complete workbook – lesson 1
  • Produce an information sheet on IHM – either a flyer, an A5 poster, an A4 trifold leaflet – include all details such as treatment length, benefits
  • Practise shoulder routine – view the video of shoulder routine, practise routine, video it and submit for feedback

LESSON 2

  • Read/research why a consultation is essential in all complementary therapy
  • Read/research on how to undertake a consultation

  • Discussion about the consultation process – find out client preferences, client’s expectations, build client rapport, role play consultation
  • Ways of evaluating the  effectiveness of treatment – asking for feedback, client rebooking, email a questionnaire
  • Aftercare/home care advice – generic aftercare advice, specific home care advice

LESSON 3

LESSON 4

Pre-reading/self-research to be done prior to Zoom lesson

  • Research why it is important to behave in a professional manner as a therapist – what is the specific behaviour, why is it important, what would happen if you breach professional standards?
  • Research the specific health & safety regulations surrounding complementary therapies and why are they important?

  • Discussion on professional behaviour and ethics within the complementary therapy industry
  • Discussion on communication skills, from the first contact with a client, through the consultation process, and booking a return visit
  • Discussion of benefits of IHM on skin – structure and function of the skin

LESSON 5

  • Read/research why the position of the client is important throughout treatment
  • Read/research why the position/posture of the therapist is important throughout treatment
  • Research different types of hair/conditions and how IHM could be of benefit
  • Read the structure and function of the hair

LESSON 6

Pre-reading / self-research to be done prior to Zoom lesson

  • Research ways in which IHM may need to be adapted such as time constraints, oil/no oil preferences of the client, longer spent on one area, an area missed out altogether (client preference), or a wheelchair user
  • Pre-read what ‘contra-indications’ mean and what they are.  Why are they important to know?

  • Discussion on adaptations to IHM

  • Chakras – what are they? Do you believe in them? Would you use them in your treatment?

Face-to-Face Learning/Guidance

Two days of face-to-face learning in the classroom. Your workbook will need to be completed by this time.

Day 1 will be refining the routine and building confidence working on clients brought in from outside. This allows for more practical work, rather than working on each other. Day 2 will include assessment

Costs

The initial 6-week course is £150 which gives you access to all the learning materials. Once we know when the lockdown has ended, we will schedule the practical training and when booking you will pay an additional £150.
